Kremenchuk, Industrial city in central Poltava Oblast, Ukraine
Kremenchuk is a city of regional importance in Poltava Oblast that spreads across both banks of the Dnipro River. Several bridges and railway crossings link the districts together, creating connections between residential and industrial areas on either side of the water.
The settlement began in 1571 as a fortress protecting the southern border. General Alexander Suvorov took command of the local garrison in 1786 and strengthened military presence along the river.
The city's name comes from the Ukrainian word for flint, once extracted along the riverbanks. Residents today use several waterfront parks where families gather for walks and relaxation.
Public transport runs across multiple bus and trolleybus routes serving all districts of the city. Ferry connections across the Dnipro offer additional crossing options during warm months.
The Kriukiv Railway Car Building Works has manufactured rolling stock since 1869 and remains one of the oldest facilities of its kind in the region. KrAZ factory has produced heavy trucks for military and civilian use since the 1950s.
