Puzzlewood, Ancient woodland in Forest of Dean, England
Description
Puzzlewood is an ancient woodland in Forest of Dean with winding paths through dense trees and moss-covered rocks. The terrain features twisted tree roots and natural rock formations spread across about 14 acres.
History
Roman settlers extracted iron ore here nearly 2,000 years ago and left archaeological traces behind. Excavations in the 1800s uncovered over 3,000 coins that had been buried in clay jars.
Culture
The woodland has inspired writers and filmmakers who recognized the magic in its natural landscape. Visitors can understand while walking how places like this spark artistic imagination.
Practical
The woodland has marked trails, a cafe, and play areas for children. Access is limited to protect wildlife, so plan your visit during open hours.
Did you know?
Natural cave systems called scowles formed through limestone erosion over millions of years. These underground rock formations create an intricate network that visitors discover while exploring the paths.
