Stamford Bridge, Football stadium in Fulham, England
Stamford Bridge is a football stadium in Fulham and home ground of Chelsea Football Club, with four separate stands surrounding a rectangular pitch. The seats are positioned slightly farther from the grass at both ends due to the historic oval structure, while the sidelines offer closer viewing positions.
The site began in 1877 as grounds for an athletics club until Chelsea Football Club took over and made it their permanent home in 1905. Since then, the ground has been rebuilt several times, with most of the modern structures dating from the nineties.
On match days, fans gather in pubs along Fulham Road before walking together to the ground, singing and creating a charged atmosphere. The loudest chants usually come from the Matthew Harding Stand, where longtime supporters sit and keep the energy high throughout the ninety minutes.
Fulham Broadway station on the District Line sits right next to the ground and provides the easiest access for visitors. Additional bus routes stop along Fulham Road, which runs beside the eastern side of the site and connects to other parts of the city.
The original running track shaped the oval footprint of the ground, which is why corner seats today sit noticeably farther from the touchline than central areas. This unusual geometry gives spectators at the goals a different viewing experience than those along the sidelines.
