Kensington, Residential district in West London, Great Britain.
Kensington is a residential district west of Hyde Park in West London, where Victorian buildings, upscale shops and well-maintained residential streets define the streetscape. Wide avenues pass through rows of houses with white facades and green courtyards, while three large museums for art and science stand close together in the southern part.
The area was a farming village in the 11th century and grew into a residence for wealthy Londoners after 1700. In the 19th century, museums, parks and town palaces appeared here, shaping the district to this day.
The rows of houses near Hyde Park are often finished in pale stucco and seem to have been there forever. Neighbors meet in the small parks between the streets, where children play under old trees and paths are lined with hedges.
You can reach the district through three underground stations, each heading in different directions and serving different parts of the area. The main streets have shops and cafes, while the side streets are quieter and invite a walk.
A private road on the edge of the district is guarded by police and houses several embassies behind high walls. Access is restricted, and the value of the houses there is among the highest in the city.
