Blackgang Chine, Theme park on the Isle of Wight, United Kingdom
Blackgang Chine is a theme park on the southern coast of the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom, with rides and walkthrough attractions spread across several themed zones. The site extends over landscaped grounds offering different areas designed for various ages.
Alexander Dabell opened the site in 1843 with a display of a whale skeleton and other natural exhibits. The grounds gradually transformed into a ride-based park over the following decades.
The name comes from the geological feature, a chine being a deep coastal ravine cutting through the cliffs overlooking the English Channel. Families often spend several hours exploring the different zones one after another.
Visitors can return free of charge within seven days after the first entry, making it easier to explore at a slower pace. The site offers parking at no cost and has restaurants and shops on the grounds.
Coastal erosion reshapes the grounds constantly, forcing attractions to move further inland on a regular basis. Some areas once popular with visitors now lie beneath the sea or have disappeared entirely.
