Dunsfold Aerodrome, Military airfield in Waverley, England
Dunsfold Aerodrome is a former military airfield in Waverley featuring three runways now used by various businesses and aviation activities. The site contains workshops, testing facilities, and office spaces arranged around the paved flight strips.
Canadian forces and civilian contractors built this facility in 1942 as a bomber base, completing construction in several months. After the war, it remained operational and was eventually converted for aviation testing and business use.
The aerodrome houses a World War II museum with authentic artifacts, supported by local volunteers who maintain exhibits about military aviation history.
The site is today mainly accessible for business activities, with visits requiring coordination with the companies operating there. The open spaces and pathways are fairly easy to navigate, though they offer little shelter from the weather.
From 2002 to 2020, this site was the main filming location for the British show Top Gear, where vehicle testing sequences were recorded on the runways. Many of the dramatic scenes viewers watched were shot across these open spaces.
