Porthmadog, Harbor town in Gwynedd, Wales

Porthmadog is a harbor town located on the Glaslyn Estuary, ringed by mountains that belong to Snowdonia National Park. An engineered embankment called the Cob connects the town directly to the sea.

The town grew into a major shipping port during the 19th century, sending slate from nearby quarries to markets around the world. The construction of the Cob embankment made this busy trade possible.

The community speaks Welsh as part of daily life, and you will hear it throughout shops, streets, and local businesses. This language presence shapes how residents connect with each other and their heritage.

The town is accessible by the A487 road or by train on the Cambrian Coast railway line, which connects to nearby towns. The town center is easy to walk around and has parking available for visitors.

The historic Ffestiniog Railway departs from the harbor and carries passengers through mountain terrain to the former slate mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog. This railway was originally built to haul slate down from the quarries to the port for shipment.
