Bowes Museum, Art museum in Barnard Castle, England.
The Bowes Museum is an art museum in Barnard Castle in northeast England, housed in a building that resembles French châteaux with tall windows and projecting bays. The rooms spread across several floors and contain paintings, sculptures, ceramics, textiles and furniture from across Europe.
John Bowes and his French wife Joséphine began construction in 1869 to house their art collection permanently. After both spouses died, the building opened to the public in 1892 and has since served its original purpose as a public exhibition space.
The collected works show styles from several centuries and countries, including Spanish, Italian and French schools. Visitors can view crafts and furniture pieces that reflect the life and taste of European households from past eras.
The building sits at the edge of the small town and can be reached on foot from the center. The garden offers seating and paths for a walk after visiting the exhibition rooms.
A mechanical swan made of silver from the 18th century performs daily, bending its neck and pulling a small fish from the water. The movements follow a set sequence and regularly draw an audience.
