Brooklands, Motor racing circuit in Weybridge, England
Brooklands is a former oval racing course and later aviation production center in Weybridge, southwest of London. The site today shows concrete tracks that run at steep angles, along with preserved halls and workshops from the period of aircraft manufacture.
The grounds opened in 1907 as the first purpose-built racing track in the world and drew drivers from across Europe. With the start of the First World War, use shifted to manufacturing military aircraft, a function that continued until the end of the Second World War.
The site brings together two traditions under one name that today honors both racing drivers and aircraft builders. Visitors see remains of the banking next to old hangars where machines were built that once shared the skies over Europe.
The museum welcomes visitors on most days and offers access to buildings where historic vehicles and aircraft are housed. Large parts of the old oval lie outdoors and allow walks along the preserved banking.
A section of the old track still runs beneath a later runway that was laid over parts of the racing course during the war years. Some remains of the banking now stand among houses built on the grounds after the conflict.
