Henley-on-Thames is a market town on the River Thames in Oxfordshire, southeastern England. More than 300 buildings in Georgian style shape the town center, including the protected bridge that crosses the river.
King Henry II founded the settlement in 1179 on the riverbank. The town received its official charter from Queen Elizabeth I in the 16th century.
The town hosts the royal regatta each summer, drawing rowing crews from around the world to compete on the river. Spectators line the banks to watch races unfold along a designated stretch of the Thames.
The River and Rowing Museum shows exhibitions about local heritage and rowing sports. Visitors reach the town by train through the branch line to Twyford with connection to the capital.
The town served as a filming location for the television series Midsomer Murders, set in fictional villages across English counties. Several scenes were shot along the Thames and in the historic streets.
