Exmouth, Coastal town in East Devon, England

Description

Exmouth is a coastal settlement on the eastern side of the River Exe estuary in East Devon, featuring a two-mile sandy beach and red sandstone cliffs overlooking the English Channel. The town extends along the waterfront with a harbor area offering boat facilities and water sports, plus a town center with shops, cafes, and residences arranged along the main streets.

History

The settlement began as a medieval fishing port but transformed into a popular seaside resort after 1750, when wealthy visitors arrived for sea bathing and leisure. This shift from working harbor to holiday destination shaped the buildings and layout that visitors see today.

Culture

The town takes its name from its position at the mouth of the River Exe and remains a working port shaped by its relationship with the water. You will notice fishing boats in the harbor, seafood sold at local shops, and residents using the beach and waterfront paths as part of their daily rhythm.

Practical

The best access to the beach is from the town center, where several paths lead down to the water and the waterfront promenade is easily walkable. Visitors should note that tides affect the beach layout, especially when exploring the cliffs and rocky areas along the shore.

Did you know?

The geological formation at Orcombe Point marks the beginning of a 95-mile coastal stretch displaying 185 million years of Earth history. This spot is the starting point of a famous walking route that many visitors miss while focusing on the beach.
