Fortingall Yew, Ancient yew tree in Fortingall, Scotland
Located in a churchyard, this male yew tree features multiple stems emerging from its base, with a trunk that measures several meters in circumference.
Scientific studies indicate the tree has existed for approximately 5,000 years, making it one of the oldest documented living organisms in Europe.
Local traditions connect this ancient yew to numerous Scottish folklore tales, with some linking it to the time when Romans occupied parts of Britain.
Visitors can observe the tree from behind a protective fence in the churchyard of Fortingall, accessible through designated pathways within the village.
In 2015, scientists discovered that a section of this traditionally male tree started producing red berries, indicating an unexpected gender transformation.
