Cumnock, town in East Ayrshire, Scotland, UK

Cumnock is a small town in East Ayrshire with a Victorian core of solid stone buildings from the 1800s. The structures around the central square share a consistent character, built from a distinctive reddish-orange sandstone that gives the place visual unity.

The town grew prosperous from the 1800s onward with iron and coal industries that made it an economic hub. This industrial focus ended with the closure of the ironworks in the 1920s and the later decline of mining.

The name Cumnock comes from Gaelic and means "valley of pigs". The town developed as a regional crossroads where two main roads met, making it a natural gathering place for trade and community life.

The town is easily accessible by car via the A76 and A70 roads that run through the area and connect to the center. The old railway station closed long ago, but the rail line still passes nearby if you are coming from elsewhere in the region.

The town earned fame in the 1800s for making snuff boxes, hand-crafted wooden cases with decorated lids and hinges that were exported far and wide. James Keir Hardie, born and trained here as a journalist, went on to found the Scottish Labour Party and left a mark on British political history.
