Clacton-on-Sea, Seaside resort town in Essex, England
Clacton-on-Sea is a coastal town in Essex, England, sitting on the North Sea shoreline within Tendring district. The beach runs for several miles and is backed by a promenade that follows the waterfront.
A small fishing village began its transformation into a seaside resort in 1871 when landowner Peter Schuyler Bruff laid out plots and planned a coastal development. The railway line arrived eleven years later and brought visitors directly from London to the shore.
The Clacton Airshow draws thousands of visitors each year to witness displays of aircraft, from vintage models to modern military planes.
Most facilities and shops line the main street that runs parallel to the beach and is within walking distance from the railway station. Beach access is available at several points and the paths are mostly level.
At low tide, remnants of submerged forests sometimes appear, dating back thousands of years to when the area was dry land. These tree stumps and roots show the slow change of the coastline over time.
