Reform Club, Gentlemen's club in Pall Mall, London
The Reform Club is a gentlemen's club in the City of Westminster, London, United Kingdom. The pale stone building displays columns, round arches and decorated ceilings that recall early Renaissance Italian palaces.
Charles Barry, who also designed the Palace of Westminster, created the building that opened in March 1841. The founders wanted a place where supporters of electoral reform could meet.
The name refers to the Reform Act of 1832, which brought more representation to Britain's Parliament. Members gather in rooms that recall nineteenth-century aristocratic townhouses, with wood paneling and tall windows overlooking the street.
The building sits at 104 Pall Mall, a short walk from Trafalgar Square and Green Park. The interiors are normally accessible only to members, though the pale stone facade stands out among other buildings on the street.
Jules Verne chose this place as the starting point for Phileas Fogg's wager in his novel Around the World in Eighty Days. The central staircase inside resembles one in a Florentine palazzo and served as a model for other London buildings.
