Travellers Club, Gentlemen's club in Pall Mall, London
The Travellers Club is a private gentlemen's club in a Grade I listed building at 106 Pall Mall, built in a Renaissance style with a tower added in 1842. The facade shows classical proportions with pilasters and arches, while the interiors contain dining rooms, private meeting spaces, and a bar.
Lord Castlereagh founded the club in 1819 after the Napoleonic Wars as a meeting place for experienced travelers. Charles Barry designed the present building between 1829 and 1832, drawing inspiration from the Palazzo Pandolfini in Florence.
The name refers to the original membership rule requiring each member to have traveled at least 500 miles from London. The library now holds one of Britain's most extensive private collections of travel literature.
The building is a private club accessible only to members and their guests. The facade and entrance on Pall Mall can be viewed from the street.
A cast of the Bassae Frieze from a fifth-century BC Greek temple is displayed in one of the rooms. Charles Barry designed this building before creating the Houses of Parliament, and he used similar classical elements in both works.
