Goodison Park, Football stadium in Walton, Liverpool, England
Goodison Park is an association football venue in Walton, Liverpool, England. The four covered stands form a compact rectangle with blue and white seating and wrought-iron decorations on the facades.
The ground opened in August 1892 after the club left its previous site. Architect Archibald Leitch designed the first structures, which were later expanded several times.
The name Goodison comes from a local engineer who worked in the area during the nineteenth century. Visitors on match days witness traditional supporter rituals, with songs and chants echoing across the stands.
The site lies roughly two miles (three kilometers) north of Liverpool city center and is well served by public transport. Visitors should arrive earlier on match days, as roads around the ground become congested.
A church stands directly behind one of the stands, its spire rising above the roofline. During the 1966 World Cup, a semi-final took place here, with West Germany facing the Soviet Union.
