Carfax, Medieval tower at crossroads in Oxford, England
Carfax is a medieval tower standing at the intersection of four main streets in central Oxford: St Aldate's, Cornmarket Street, Queen Street, and High Street. From its top, visitors get sweeping views across the entire city center.
The tower was built in 1122 as part of St Martin's Church, which served as Oxford's official city church for many centuries. Over time the church was partly demolished, leaving only the tower standing, which has remained a focal point ever since.
The tower features six bells cast by Richard Keene in the 1670s, which ring during special occasions by the Oxford Society of Change Ringers.
The climb involves steep, narrow stairs winding upward and requires some physical effort. Once at the top, you can catch your breath and take time to enjoy the expansive views across the city.
The Oxford City Council maintains a regulation that no building in central Oxford may exceed the height of Carfax Tower.
