Oakwell, Sports stadium in Barnsley, England

Oakwell is a sports stadium in Barnsley with four distinct stands surrounding the grass pitch, including the two-tier East Stand and the Norman Rimmington Stand built in 1995. The venue provides over 23,000 seats throughout the grounds, with the North Stand designated for away supporters and multiple food service areas.

The stadium opened in 1888 and became the home ground for Barnsley Football Club, later serving rugby league matches as well. Over the decades, various stands were added and upgraded to meet the changing needs of spectators.

The West Stand retains original seating from the early 1900s, designed by architect Archibald Leitch, showing how British football stadiums were built in that era. Walking past this section, you can see the craftsmanship and design choices that shaped the spectator experience over a century ago.

The stadium is easy to reach and visitors should arrive early to have time to explore the grounds. Most areas are well-signposted, and there is plenty of parking available along with accessible facilities for people with limited mobility.

This stadium was the first English football venue to build a stand specifically designed for disabled supporters. This innovation in the 1990s showed how the grounds were committed to making the experience accessible for all visitors.
