Craigievar Castle, Tower house and museum in Alford, Scotland

The seven-story pink-colored castle rises among the hills of Aberdeenshire, featuring turrets, gargoyles, and ornate corbels in Scottish Baronial architecture style.

William Forbes, a merchant known for Baltic trade, purchased and completed the construction of Craigievar Castle in 1626, establishing it as the Forbes family residence.

The Great Hall contains carved wooden screens, painted ceilings, and a collection of portraits by Scottish artist Sir Henry Raeburn from the 17th century.

The castle operates guided tours from Easter through September, with access limited to small groups due to space constraints in the narrow staircases.

The upper floors maintain their historical authenticity by using only natural sunlight, as artificial lighting remains deliberately absent from these spaces.

Historical sites of Aberdeen: castles, cathedrals and Scottish heritage

Aberdeen and its region feature a series of sites that testify to several centuries of Scottish history. The city contains religious buildings such as the 14th-century St. Machar Cathedral, cultural institutions like the neoclassical Music Hall from 1822, and the Maritime Museum, as well as green spaces including Duthie Park with its botanical greenhouses. The port, active since the 12th century, remains an important center for maritime industry. A 3.5-kilometer sandy beach borders the North Sea, while the Footdee district retains its 19th-century fishing houses.
