Corse Castle

Corse Castle is a fortified stone fortress in Coull that combines several architectural features including round towers positioned at different corners. The building merges residential spaces with defensive elements through its layered tower system, creating a structure adapted to both living and protection.

William Forbes ordered the construction of this fortress in 1581 after violent raids destroyed the earlier dwelling on the same site. The new building represented a response to the dangers of the time, incorporating stronger defenses into the family residence.

The castle shows how Scottish minor nobles built their homes to be both comfortable places to live and defensible against attacks through its distinctive layout.

The castle can be reached by turning north from the B9119 road and following a minor road that leads westward through open countryside. Visitors should wear suitable footwear for walking across fields to reach the ruins.

The fortress combines two different floor plan styles in a way that is rarely seen in other Scottish fortified houses of its period. This unusual mixing of construction methods shows how the owner adapted the design to meet specific practical needs.
