Tomnaverie, stone circle

Tomnaverie, stone circle, Neolithic stone circle near Tarland, Scotland

Tomnaverie is a stone circle near Tarland in Aberdeenshire, measuring about 18 meters across, with upright stones arranged in a ring. A large flat stone sits between two vertical pillars, positioned to face toward the southwest.

The circle was built roughly 4,500 years ago by early communities in the region. Excavations carried out in 1999 and 2000 restored the structure by returning fallen stones to their original positions.

This stone circle served as a gathering place where early communities connected with the land and sky around them. The arrangement reveals how people of that time related to their surroundings.

The site is free to visit year-round and can be reached by a well-maintained path from a car park south of the B9094 road. The walk is straightforward and clearly marked for visitors.

From the center of the circle, the flat stone and its flanking pillars frame a view of the mountain Lochnagar in the distance. This aligned view may have been intentional, suggesting the builders chose this location deliberately.
