Tomnaverie, stone circle

A collection of upright stones forms a circle measuring 18 meters in diameter, with a large horizontal stone positioned between two vertical stones facing southwest.

Archaeological excavations in 1999 and 2000 led to the restoration of the stone circle, placing recovered stones back into their original positions from 4,500 years ago.

The stone circle stands as a testament to early Scottish agricultural communities who used astronomical alignments to track seasonal changes and lunar movements.

Visitors can reach the stone circle via a maintained path from a designated parking area south of the B9094 road, with year-round access at no cost.

From the center of the circle, the horizontal stone and its flanking pillars create a natural frame for viewing the mountain of Lochnagar.
