Burgh Island, Tidal island in Bigbury-on-Sea, England.

Burgh Island lies around 29 kilometers (18 miles) from Plymouth along the Devon coast and connects to the mainland by a sandy pathway at low tide. A mechanical sea tractor carries pedestrians across when the water rises.

The island hosts a pub from the 14th century and an Art Deco hotel that opened in 1929 and expanded in 1932. Both structures reflect the long history of use at this location.

The island served as a writing retreat for Agatha Christie and influenced her crime novels. Visitors can tour parts of the estate, which continues to preserve the spirit of the 1930s.

Access to the island is on foot across the causeway at low tide or aboard the sea tractor when the tide rises. Tides change several times each day, so check water levels before crossing.

The hotel names its 25 rooms after famous guests from past decades. This naming choice recalls the time when the property was a popular gathering place for British society.
