Mothecombe Beach, Sandy beach in South Hams, England.
Mothecombe Beach is a sandy beach in South Hams located at the mouth of the river Erme. The water near the shore is shallow and the coastal area is protected from development.
The beach was a trading post during Roman times where North African merchants exchanged Mediterranean wine and oil for British tin. Later, a swimming facility was constructed here in the early 1900s.
The beach served as a filming location for International Velvet in 1978 and the 1996 adaptation of Rebecca. These productions have made this spot recognizable to people who know those films.
The beach has a tea house and toilets located in the car park. A beach house is also available for daily rental if you want more shelter.
South of the beach, you can find the remains of a circular stone wall from a seawater swimming facility built in 1875. Damage from World War II operations is still visible on this historic structure.
