The Gatehouse, Grade II listed pub near Monnow Bridge in Monmouth, Wales
The Gatehouse is a Grade II listed pub near Monnow Bridge in Monmouth featuring a main bar with mahogany counter and flagstone flooring throughout. The building contains multiple accommodation sections with private entrances, a function room with its own bar, and several terraces overlooking the River Monnow.
The establishment opened in 1812 under the name Barley Mow and later hosted monthly meetings of a women's mutual aid society. This group provided financial assistance to members facing unemployment and medical hardship.
The pub served as a meeting place for local societies, particularly the Loyal Trafalgar Lodge of Druids Friendly Society, which held their Jubilee celebration here in 1887. People gathered regularly for social occasions and important community events.
The pub has a commercial kitchen and operates as both a drinking establishment and event venue with a dedicated function room. Riverside terraces offer multiple vantage points for viewing the water, and visitors can access outdoor seating at different levels.
This is the only pub in Monmouth offering direct access to the riverside, with its beer garden built on the site of three former cottages. This arrangement created an unusual open space in a tightly built area next to the bridge.
