Byward Tower, Medieval entrance tower in Tower of London complex, England

The Byward Tower consists of two cylindrical structures connected by a square building with a wide passage secured by a portcullis system.

King Henry III constructed the Byward Tower between 1238 and 1272 to strengthen the defenses of the Tower of London's central keep.

The first floor contains a medieval wall painting depicting the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist at the Crucifixion.

The tower functions as the main visitor entrance to the Tower of London complex, featuring security checkpoints and information facilities.

The tower received its name from its location next to the Warder's Hall, with 'Byward' evolving from the phrase 'by the warders.'
