Jewel House, Crown Jewels vault in Tower of London, England
The Jewel House is a modern vault inside the Tower of London that holds the royal regalia of Great Britain. The collection includes crowns, sceptres, swords, and ceremonial vessels displayed in climate-controlled glass cases under constant supervision.
The current building was established after the 17th century, when the treasury was reinforced following a theft attempt. During World War II, the jewels were hidden outside London and returned only after the war ended.
The main hall displays the State Crown, used at coronations for centuries and watched daily by ceremonial guards. Visitors move past the displays on mechanical belts, ensuring everyone gets an equal view.
Lines are shorter in the morning before group tours arrive, especially on weekdays during spring and autumn. The route passes through dimly lit rooms with steps, so visitors should walk carefully.
The medieval basement vault has walls roughly 13 feet (4 meters) thick, designed so earlier rulers could sleep soundly. The locking system still requires multiple keys held by different people at the same time.
