Cadbury Castle, Iron Age contour fort in South Cadbury, England
Cadbury Castle is an Iron Age fortification on a hill in South Cadbury, Somerset. The site shows several concentric ramparts that encircle the summit and run at different heights.
People lived here from the Neolithic period and built early defenses. The Celtic Durotriges used the site until the Roman conquest around 70 AD.
The link to King Arthur has stayed alive in local memory for centuries. Visitors find traces of this legend at certain points and can see how the hill's position fed such stories.
Marked paths lead through the different areas of the site and allow exploration on foot. The ground is open to visitors but sturdy footwear is needed because of some steep sections.
Excavations in the 20th century found evidence of trade with the Mediterranean during the early Middle Ages. Imported pottery and glass fragments show contacts with distant regions at a time after Roman rule ended.
