Church of St Michael, North Cadbury

Church of St Michael, North Cadbury, Medieval church in North Cadbury, England

The Church of St Michael is a medieval place of worship with a three-part tower and matching porches on each side of the building. Inside, large windows flood the space with light, creating an open and spacious interior that reflects its original purpose as a collegiate church.

A noblewoman named Elizabeth de Botreaux commissioned the rebuilding of this place in the 1420s and established a college of seven chaplains while keeping the older tower standing. This 15th century transformation shaped the building's appearance, which has largely remained unchanged since then.

The carved bench ends from the 1500s show everyday scenes from that era, with people dressed in period clothing and animals appearing alongside local figures. These crafted details give visitors a direct window into how villagers dressed and lived during that time.

This place sits in a small village and is easily accessible when planning around local service times. It is best to check opening times beforehand, as it remains an active place of worship with regular functions.

This place appears surprisingly large for a village of fewer than one thousand people, revealing its former status as a collegiate institution. The impressive scale compared to the small population is still visible today and gives visitors a sense of how important this site once was.
