University of Bath, Public research university in Bath, England
The University of Bath is a public research institution set on a sprawling campus southeast of the city of Bath. The site includes several building complexes housing lecture halls, laboratories, student housing, and leisure facilities spread across gently sloping hills.
The institution received its royal charter in 1966, growing out of earlier technical colleges in Bristol that date back to the 16th century. Over the following decades it developed into a focus for engineering and applied research in southwest England.
Students from more than 130 countries live and work together on campus, giving the place an international character. The grounds include an arts centre that hosts regular performances and exhibitions, drawing both visitors and the wider community throughout the year.
Public buses link the grounds to Bath city centre, and visitors can walk freely around the site. The library and sports centre open long hours daily, and cafes and outdoor seating areas are found throughout.
The campus sits on high ground with sweeping views over the surrounding countryside and rooftops of Bath in the distance. A network of footpaths and green spaces links the buildings, inviting walks between events.
