Fort George, Military fortress in Ardersier, Scotland
Fort George is a coastal fortification on the Moray Firth featuring thick stone walls and extensive grounds designed to house soldiers and artillery. The site contains preserved barracks, ramparts, and military structures that visitors can walk through and explore.
Construction took place between 1748 and 1769 as Britain strengthened control over the Scottish Highlands following the 1745 uprising. The fort was built to prevent future rebellions and secure British military authority in the region.
The fort contains a museum displaying uniforms, weapons, and personal items from Scottish regiments. The collection tells the story of soldiers who served here and how they lived within these walls.
The fort is open to visitors throughout the year and features walkways allowing you to explore the grounds and view different areas. Warm clothing is recommended since the coastal location can be windy and open areas offer little shelter.
The fort has remained continuously occupied by the military for over 250 years since completion and is still used by British infantry units today. This makes it one of the few fortifications from this era that has kept its original purpose.
