Calderstones Park, Public park and archaeological site in Allerton, Liverpool, England
Calderstones Park is a 126-acre parkland featuring botanical gardens, a lake populated with waterfowl, and walking paths that wind through the grounds. The site also contains ancient Neolithic sandstone monuments and a historical mansion dating to the 1800s.
The Calder Stones, a group of six megaliths, date back around 4,000 years and originally formed part of a burial chamber covered by an earthen mound. The mansion was constructed in 1828 and later became an important social building for the area.
The 1828 mansion now operates as The Reader organization's center, offering literature programs and reading activities for the community. Local people gather here to participate in book discussions and cultural events.
The park provides various recreational facilities to explore, including tennis courts, children's play areas, and a café within the historic mansion. Sturdy footwear is recommended as paths can vary in condition depending on weather.
The Allerton Oak, an ancient oak tree on the grounds, was selected as England's Tree of the Year in 2019, decades after suffering damage from a river explosion in 1864. The tree is now supported with special structures to preserve it for future generations.
