Charterhouse School, Private boarding school in Godalming, England
The school spreads over 100 hectares in the county of Surrey and shows buildings in Gothic Revival style with towers, pointed arch windows and courtyards. Sport facilities include rugby fields, tennis courts, a golf course and a theater on the grounds.
Thomas Sutton founded the institution in 1611 in London as a charity school for boys without financial means. The move to Godalming took place in 1921 because of limited space in the capital.
The campus follows the British boarding school system with dormitories, common rooms and dining halls for student daily life. The fifteen houses wear their own colors and organize competitions in music, theater and different sports throughout the school year.
The campus sits around 30 miles (50 kilometers) southwest of London and is surrounded by hills and wooded areas. Buildings are usually not open to the public except during special events or by prior arrangement.
Students and teachers from the institution contributed to developing the first uniform rules for football in the 1860s. This work happened in cooperation with other schools and helped shape the modern sport.
