Okehampton, Civil parish and town in West Devon, England
Okehampton is a town in West Devon situated at the northern boundary of Dartmoor National Park, where the East and West Okement Rivers converge. The town sits at an elevation of around 150 meters and serves as a natural gateway to the national park.
The town grew from a Saxon settlement into a Norman stronghold after 1066, marked by the construction of a castle that served as an administrative center. This early fortress established the place as an important control point in the region.
The Museum of Dartmoor Life displays three floors showing how local communities developed through farming and industrial periods. The exhibits document the way people have lived and worked here across generations.
The restored railway station on the Dartmoor Line offers regular connections to Exeter with services every two hours throughout the day. Visitors should note that weekend services may be limited and it is worth checking in advance.
The Granite Way is a dedicated cycling and walking path extending from here through former railway tracks and viaducts toward Lydford. The route follows abandoned railway lines and offers walkers and cyclists an unusual view of the moorland.
