Dolaucothi Gold Mines

Dolaucothi is an ancient gold mine in Wales with Roman origins and later medieval and modern activity, shaped by mining over 2000 years. The site displays underground passages, open excavations, and water systems that show how miners worked in different periods.

The Romans began mining here around 74 AD and built forts to manage the operations. After the Romans left, mining continued in different forms until modern times.

This place has represented wealth and power through the ages, as gold extraction drew people seeking fortune across centuries. The mines shaped how communities nearby developed and what they valued most.

Access to underground areas requires good footwear and care on slippery and uneven ground. Visitors should prepare for tight spaces and dim lighting, so bringing a flashlight helps.

This is the only documented place in Britain where the Romans extracted gold on a large scale. Preserved water tanks and channels show how they cleverly used water to loosen rock.
