Downside Abbey, Gothic Revival abbey in Stratton-on-the-Fosse, England
The Downside Abbey complex includes a monumental church with a large tower, stained glass windows, and numerous architectural ornaments throughout its structure.
The Benedictine community established the monastery in 1814 after relocating from northern France, with the current church construction starting in 1873.
The abbey maintains a dual function as a religious center for Benedictine monks and an educational institution through its affiliated Roman Catholic boarding school.
Visitors can access the abbey through designated parking areas within 250 meters of the main entrance, with street parking options available near the site.
Sir Giles Gilbert Scott designed the nave and tower, while Sir Ninian Comper created the great east window and Lady chapel furnishings.
