Dunlossit House, Port Askaig, Islay

Dunlossit House, Port Askaig, Islay, Category C listed mansion in Port Askaig, Scotland.

Description

Dunlossit House is a substantial mansion in Port Askaig on the island of Islay, positioned on elevated ground overlooking the Sound of Islay. The building features dark stone walls with red sandstone dressings, three main storeys with crowstepped gables, and a distinctive four-storey tower in Scottish baronial style.

History

The property started as a shooting lodge in 1868 but changed dramatically after a fire in 1909 destroyed much of the original structure. Donald Turner Martin oversaw the reconstruction, transforming it into the substantial building that stands today.

Culture

The estate plays a significant role in island life, where traditional farming sits alongside tourism and rural hospitality. Visitors notice how the property integrates into the local economy and landscape.

Practical

The property is located in a rural part of Islay and is best reached by car, as public transport is limited in this area. Visitors should plan ahead for weather conditions typical of the Scottish islands and consider the seasons when visiting for outdoor activities.

Did you know?

The estate encompasses approximately 18,500 acres spread across farmland, forestry, and moorland, making it one of the larger privately held properties on the island. This vast landholding supports diverse outdoor activities from fishing to stalking across its terrain.
