East Finchley Cemetery, Grade II* listed cemetery in East Finchley, England
East Finchley Cemetery is a burial ground set across sloping terrain, featuring Gothic-style chapels, ornate gatehouses, and numerous Edwardian monuments. The grounds span roughly 21 hectares and showcase a carefully designed landscape with different sections throughout the property.
The burial ground was founded in 1854 by the St Marylebone Burial Board after acquiring roughly 47 acres of Newmarket Farm. Architects Barnett and Birch designed it during a period when London needed new burial spaces to accommodate its growing population.
The grounds hold 154 Commonwealth war graves from both World Wars, with a dedicated section called Soldiers' Corner that features special memorials. These graves form an important part of the landscape and remind visitors of the area's connection to global history.
The grounds are accessible during daylight hours and sit between East Finchley and Finchley Central tube stations. The main entrances are clearly marked and easy to reach from the surrounding streets.
Two cedar trees from Lebanon stand on the front lawn beside the Grade II listed Anglican chapel. These rare trees give the place an unusual character and set it apart from other burial grounds in the area.
