Muswell Hill, Residential neighborhood in North London, United Kingdom
Muswell Hill is a residential neighborhood in North London that spreads across two boroughs and is defined by its elevated position. The streets are lined with red brick Edwardian houses arranged along gentle slopes.
The name comes from a natural spring in the 12th century called Mossy Well, which medieval pilgrims visited for its supposed healing powers. The construction of Alexandra Palace in 1873 triggered the growth of the area into a favored residential district.
Ray and Dave Davies from The Kinks grew up here and referenced nearby Fortis Green in their song Village Green Preservation Society. The area still maintains a lively music scene with small venues and record shops.
The main street offers numerous restaurants and grocery stores for daily needs, while regular bus services connect to central London. The elevated position means some uphill walking when exploring the area on foot.
Alexandra Palace now provides around 196 acres (79 hectares) of parkland with a boating lake and deer enclosure that draws families from across the surrounding area. The building itself once served as the site for the first regular BBC television broadcasts in the 1930s.
