Edin's Hall Broch

Edin's Hall Broch, Iron Age fortification near Duns, Scotland.

Description

Edin's Hall Broch is a circular stone fortification from the Iron Age with thick walls and a narrow entrance passage flanked by guard chambers. The structure stands on the northeast slope of Cockburn Law and was originally integrated into an older defensive system that used the lay of the land.

History

The structure was built as a broch in the first two centuries after Christ, while the older fortification beneath it was constructed about 2,000 to 2,500 years before that. This layering shows that the location served defensive purposes for successive communities over more than a thousand years.

Culture

The name reflects its role as a fortified settlement for the local community, and visitors can still see the cramped spaces where people lived thousands of years ago. The structure shows how important defense and control were to those who built it.

Practical

The site is accessible year-round and sits on open grassland with clear views across the landscape. Visitors should expect uneven ground and bring suitable footwear, as the slopes can be steep in places.

Did you know?

In 1976, two copper ingots were found inside the structure, sourced from nearby mining operations, showing that residents had access to valuable raw materials. This suggests it was a wealthy community with economic connections to other regions.
