South Wales, Geographic region in Wales, United Kingdom.

South Wales is a region in southern Wales, United Kingdom, stretching from the Bristol Channel to the English border. The territory includes mountain zones in the north, broad valleys further south, coastal strips along the channel, and two large cities on the southwest coastline.

From the late 18th century, coal mines and steelworks transformed the rural landscape into an industrial heartland supplying much of Britain. After heavy industry declined in the second half of the 20th century, the territory shifted toward new service-based sectors.

Many road signs display both Welsh and English place names, reflecting centuries of linguistic coexistence across the territory. In smaller western villages you can still hear older residents speaking Welsh with each other, while English dominates in the larger urban centers.

The main traffic artery runs along the southern coast, linking all major settlements. Inland, smaller roads follow the valleys, and travel times can vary depending on route and weather conditions.

On some calm days, the Irish Sea to the west and the Bristol Channel to the south are both visible from the highest points. Inland, smaller caves hold traces discovered by archaeologists dating back to the Stone Age.
