Alnwick Castle, Medieval castle in Alnwick, England.
Alnwick Castle is a fortified medieval complex in Northumberland that has stood since the 11th century and now serves as both residence and museum. Thick defensive walls surround several inner courtyards, while the state apartments feature carved wooden ceilings and paintings by Venetian masters.
A Norman baron built the first fortress in the late 11th century to secure the northern English border against Scottish raids. The Percy family took possession in the early 14th century and expanded the complex during the Tudor and Stuart periods with formal residential quarters.
The weekly farmer's market in the inner bailey showcases regional produce from Northumberland, while families with children attend the medieval costume demonstrations. Volunteers in period dress demonstrate old craft techniques such as calligraphy and blacksmithing, explaining the midday changing of the guard ceremonies.
The visit takes around three hours and covers several building sections, including stairs without elevators in the upper floors. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes, as the courtyards and ramparts are paved with uneven cobblestones.
Several film productions use the site as a backdrop, including well-known fantasy series that shot flying scenes in the inner courtyards. Visitors often recognize the distinctive towers and archways from cinema productions, adding an extra layer to the tour.

Castles and palaces from different periods and regions reveal how architecture adapted to military needs, royal ambitions, or religious purposes. Some were built as fortresses, others served as residences or symbols of power. Construction styles range from medieval defenses to grand estates of later centuries. Each structure carries the mark of its time and its builders. This collection includes places such as Neuschwanstein in Bavaria, Edinburgh Castle in Scotland, and the Alhambra in Granada. It also features Himeji Castle in Japan, the Potala Palace in Lhasa, and Prague Castle. Some sites stand on cliffs or in mountains, others lie in river valleys or near towns. Visiting them shows how defense, living space, and display came together in one building.
