Elan Valley, Protected valley and Dark Sky Park in Powys, Wales
Elan Valley is a protected valley in Powys featuring a chain of interconnected dams and reservoirs built across two rivers in the Cambrian Mountains. The landscape combines engineered water systems with natural moorlands, creating a distinctive mix of built structures and rolling terrain.
Construction of the first dam began in 1897 as part of an ambitious water supply project to serve Birmingham from nearly 80 miles away. Additional dams were added over following decades as the system expanded, though not all planned structures were completed.
The valley holds deep meaning as a feat of engineering that brought water supply to distant cities. Local communities and visitors recognize the dams as symbols of industrial progress that shaped modern Wales.
Access is via the B4518 road from Rhayader, where a visitor center offers parking and information about the area. The moorland terrain includes walking trails of varying difficulty, so appropriate footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended.
The valley earned designation as an International Dark Sky Park because of its remarkably dark skies ideal for stargazing. This status is rare in Britain, making it a special destination for viewing the night sky with minimal light pollution.
