Loch Morar, Freshwater lake in Highland, Scotland

Loch Morar is a freshwater body in the Scottish Highlands that extends for nearly 19 kilometers and holds the record as the deepest in Britain, reaching more than 300 meters down. The water is clear, the shoreline alternates between rocky stretches and small sandy coves, and wooded slopes rise on both sides.

The loch was shaped during the last ice age, when glaciers carved deep valleys through the bedrock. Between 1790 and 1826, many residents of the surrounding settlements left the region during the Highland Clearances and emigrated to Canada.

The name comes from Gaelic and roughly means "loch of the sea", reflecting the way its western end opens almost directly onto the Atlantic coast. Fishermen still work these waters, and you may see small boats moving slowly across the surface in search of trout.

The western side of the loch is easier to reach from the coast, especially at the Silver Sands of Morar, where access to the water is open. The eastern end lies more remotely and requires a longer walk or a boat trip.

The loch contains two separate basins, both exceeding 270 meters in depth, divided by a shallower ridge in the middle. Water temperature remains relatively stable throughout the year, dropping only slightly even in winter.
