Inverailort House, Georgian country house in Highland, Scotland
Inverailort House is a country house with a Georgian core built in 1756, located at the head of Loch Ailort in the Scottish Highlands. Multiple wings were added throughout the 1800s, including a baronial-style extension and a section built in the Old Scots architectural manner.
The property was requisitioned by the War Office in 1940 and converted into a training facility for the Special Operations Executive. It was later transferred to the Royal Navy and designated as HMS Lochailort.
A Catholic chapel was added to the first floor during the late 1800s, showing how faith was woven into daily life within the household. This space reflects the religious traditions that were important to Highland families during that era.
The house sits at the head of Loch Ailort, near where the A830 Road to the Isles meets the A861. This location makes it reasonably accessible by road from nearby areas.
The interior still displays original military signage from World War II, dating back to when it served as a Special Training Centre. These markings preserve evidence of how resistance fighters were trained in guerrilla tactics.
