Capelrig House, Category A listed building in East Renfrewshire, Scotland
Capelrig House is a Georgian country house from the 18th century with a southwest wing added in 1913, situated in Newton Mearns. The building displays the symmetrical proportions and brickwork typical of its period, with the later addition complementing the original structure.
Medieval religious orders, beginning with the Knights Templar and later the Knights Hospitaller, held the Capelrig lands from the 12th century onward. The Georgian mansion was built much later but evolved into a significant estate property over the centuries.
The house carries historical layers that residents and visitors recognize through its age and form, connecting back centuries to medieval times. This connection between past ownership and present use makes the building meaningful in local memory.
The building houses administrative offices today and is accessible during business hours, though public viewing is limited to certain areas. Visitors should check in advance about access conditions, as it remains an active work location rather than a museum or heritage site.
The property faced demolition in the mid-20th century but was saved through community action. This intervention led to its transformation into a cultural hub, fundamentally changing the building's role in local life.
