Gleneagles Hotel, Luxury hotel in Auchterarder, Scotland
Gleneagles Hotel is a Category B listed building in Auchterarder, Perthshire, spreading over more than 340 hectares and incorporating three championship golf courses. The estate holds 232 rooms, multiple restaurants, a spa, and facilities for tennis, archery, horse riding and other outdoor leisure activities.
The estate opened in June 1924 as a hunting and golfing domain for wealthy travellers from Edinburgh and Glasgow. During World War II the military used the building as a hospital before it returned to hotel operations after the war ended.
The name derives from Gaelic words meaning narrow valley and refers to the surrounding countryside. Today guests use the estate for conferences, weddings and sporting events, with rooms furnished using tapestries, wood panelling and Scottish motifs.
Visitors should bring weatherproof clothing as many activities take place outdoors and Highland weather can change quickly. The reception desk provides information about availability of sports facilities and recommends booking for evening dining.
The estate hosted the 2014 Ryder Cup and the 2019 Solheim Cup, becoming the only European venue for both tournaments. The on-site falconry breeds birds of prey that perform regular public flights and help deter wild geese from the lawns.
