The Gop

The Gop is a prehistoric burial mound in Wales that stretches 80 meters in length and stands 12 meters high. This massive earthwork sits on elevated ground and commands views across the surrounding landscape.

The Gop was built in the Neolithic period as a burial mound and is the largest cairn in Wales. This ancient structure shows how early communities constructed monumental earthworks.

Local traditions connect The Gop to Queen Boadicea, while the adjacent medieval stone cross in Trelawnyd marks an ancient preaching location.

The site is accessible from nearby roads and can be visited on foot from local parking areas. Sturdy footwear is recommended as the terrain can become muddy, especially after rain.

A cave discovered in 1886 lies within the mound and shows signs of ancient human activity. This geological feature connects natural rock formations with the archaeological significance of the site.
