River Wharfe, River system in Yorkshire, England.
River Wharfe is a waterway in northern England that flows through limestone valleys and meadows. It rises in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and joins the River Ouse after passing through several towns.
Viking settlers gave the waterway its name in the 9th century. The riverbed and its banks have remained largely natural through the centuries.
The name comes from Old Norse „hverfi
The long-distance footpath Dales Way follows the river for much of its course and provides many access points to the banks. Many sections work well for walks and day trips.
More than 230 bird species live in the river ecosystem. Red grouse nest near the limestone formations along the banks.
