Trellick Tower, Brutalist high-rise in Kensal Town, England
Trellick Tower is a residential tower block in the Kensal Town area of London, rising 31 floors above the surrounding streets with its reinforced concrete frame. The main block stands parallel to a narrow service unit that houses lifts and mechanical equipment.
Architect Ernő Goldfinger designed the building as social housing and completed it in 1972 to replace older Victorian homes. The local council commissioned the project after the Second World War as part of a wider modernization program.
The detached lift tower stands beside the residential block and links to the apartments every three floors through narrow bridges. This design choice shapes the appearance and makes the structure instantly recognizable to visitors.
The building continues to function as a residential block and remains closed to the public, but can be viewed from the surrounding streets. The best views of the exterior structure are from Golborne Road or from Kensal Green Cemetery.
Residents formed their own management association in 1994, organizing daily life in the building and improving security. This form of self-governance helped overcome the difficulties of the early years and contributed to its current recognition.
